In 10.04 the USB devices were greyed out. To get them back I did 
<pre>
sudo adduser chris vboxusers
</pre>
Additionally, to get the printer to not be greyed out I did 
<pre>
sudo adduser chris lp
</pre>
Log out, log back in for changes to take effect.

Return to Virtualbox USB Greyed Out.
