Use Synaptic to add backports etc, reload
Graphics
Add the nVidia driver as required, if the settings won't save run
sudo nvidia-xconfig
to create a new Xorg.conf then run
sudo nvidia-settings
again.

sudo apt-get install emerald samba smbfs
To get emerald activated you may need to do Ubuntu_Compiz_Emerald_Themes
