Ten months ago we decided to start saving for a trip to Philippines to visit family, and since we would be halfway around the world already, to tack on a trip to Italy, one of my favourite countries.
I’ve been to Italy as a very young child, and for skiing in the Alps, but my main trip was for a couple of weeks 20 years ago where I winged it and made up an itinerary as I went.
With next to no useful Internet back then and just the Lonely Planet to guide me I travelled a remarkably good route. So good in fact I have not been able to improve on it much. While last time I turned up in a new place and spent the first few hours sorting out a bed for the night, this time I am organising everything much more in advance. Travelling by yourself and being responsible to only yourself is one thing, but travelling with a child is quite another. So much more advance planning this time!
